Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us for our “Noche de Poesía y Arte” held at Republica Sur on June 16th, 2016. It was a great success, a lot of fun, and we raised more than $350 for Proyecto Samán. Overall, we had a night full of poetry in both Spanish and English, several music acts including Tiago Bedón (Ecuador), former broadway star Cindy Benson (USA), and Sol Okarina (Colombia/Venezuela), as well as a short solo theater piece put on by Cuenca’s own Francisco “Pancho” Aguirre.
The room filled up with people, some of the readers even coming from Portoviejo, which was appropriate since the night was meant to be a reflection on the aftermath of the disastrous earthquake that hit the coast of Ecuador on April 16th, 2016. Representatives from Colectivo Madre Tierra and Proyecto Samán explained the vision for their unique rebuilding effort in Canoa that will provide more than just shelter for 50 families: it will create a community to inspire the change necessary for the locals to start taking things into their own hands. During the night there was room for both heartfelt reflection and visions of hope, but always with the constant reminder to not forget those that are affected on the coast during this crucial rebuilding phase.
Thank you to all the artists, poets, and participants that made this night unforgettable! We look forward to hosting more events in the future.
